How do i know what my rating is?

USTA RATING

If you are already registered with USTA and have a USTA-issued rating, great! Please use that. 

NO USTA RATING? NO PROBLEM!

Please self-rate according to the descriptions below.


NOTE: a player or team can play above their rating, but never below!  

2.0 BRAND NEW TO TENNIS

This person might say: "I just started playing recently! I'm not awesome yet, but I love it!" 

  • Developing basic skills
  • Learning court and racquet feel
  • Understanding rules of the game and scoring 
  • Needs on-court experience 

2.5 BEGINNER

This person might say: "I mostly play for fun, on vacation or at a social mixer."  

  • Familiar with the fundamentals
  • Working on keeping the ball in play 
  • Developing ball control and sustaining a rally
  • General understanding of teamwork (doubles) 
  • Ready to play matches and low-level tournaments 

3.0 INTERMEDIATE

This person might say: "I play when I can, but I'm not as consistent as I want to be." 

  • Might have played growing up, including high school 
  • Fairly consistent strokes and first serve
  • Learning use of power and ball spin
  • Developing footwork and net play 
  • Stronger understanding of teamwork (doubles)

3.5 INTERMEDIATE PLUS

This person might say: "There's always something to work on, but I'll take the court with anyone!"

  • Likely played growing up, including high school and possibly Juniors competition  tennis
  • Dependable strokes and first serve
  • Strategic and effective use of power and ball spin
  • Strong footwork and net play 
  • Great understanding of team play (doubles)

4.0 Advanced

This person might say: "I not only play to my strengths but quickly identify my opponent's weaknesses and capitalize on them."

  • Played growing up, including high school and possibly college
  • Consistently accurate strokes, first serve and effective second serve 
  • Strong established strategy
  • Comfortable in high stress competition 

4.5+ Elite

This person might say: Very little. They mostly let their match play do the talking. 

  • Significant experience at high levels, likely played college tennis or beyond 
  • Mastered advanced techniques
  • Excellent footwork and anticipation, cover the court with ease 
  • Thrive in high stress competition
